The McLaren MP4/14 was the Formula One car that the McLaren-Mercedes team built and designed to compete in the 1999 World Championship. It was designed primarily by Neil Oatley and Henri Durand under the direction of Adrian Newey, and Mario Illien supplied the bespoke engine. The article describes it as the fastest car of the season, with aerodynamics even more advanced than those of the all-conquering MP4/13 and the most powerful engine on the grid. Mika Häkkinen drove it to his second Drivers' Championship in a row, but serious reliability problems and driver errors meant that McLaren lost the Constructors' Championship narrowly to Scuderia Ferrari. Häkkinen and David Coulthard used differently shaped steering wheels in it, and the car carried four gearshift paddles, two for the gears and two for the clutch.
