The McLaren MP4/13 was the car with which the McLaren team competed in the 1998 Formula One World Championship, and it proved the dominant car of that season. Adrian Newey, Steve Nichols, Neil Oatley and Henri Durand designed the chassis, and Mario Illien designed the bespoke Ilmor engine. Mika Hakkinen won eight races and his first drivers title, David Coulthard won at San Marino, and McLaren took its first constructors championship since 1991. The car used a brake steer system that Ferrari protested and the FIA banned, and an early hybrid arrangement that stored brake energy to run engine auxiliaries.
