The McLaren MP4/12 was the Formula One car with which the McLaren team competed in the 1997 World Championship. The chassis was designed by Steve Nichols, Neil Oatley and Henri Durand, and Mario Illien designed the bespoke Ilmor-Mercedes engine; Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard drove it. Externally it was a more streamlined and refined evolution of the MP4/11. It carried a driver-selectable second brake pedal that acted on one rear wheel, the so-called brake steer system, which Ferrari protested and the FIA banned in 1998. Engine failures cost it several likely wins, yet Coulthard won in Australia and at Monza, Häkkinen took his first victory at the season finale, and the team finished fourth in the constructors table with 63 points.
