The McLaren MP4/1 was the Formula One car with which the McLaren team began racing in 1981, first appearing at the Argentine Grand Prix, and it stayed in use through 1982 and 1983. Designed by John Barnard, Steve Nichols and Alan Jenkins, it was the first car to actually race with a chassis moulded wholly from carbon fibre composite, an approach that every Formula One team later adopted. The name MP4 stood for Marlboro Project Four or McLaren Project Four. Early cars used the Ford-Cosworth DFV V8, and late in 1983 a turbocharged Porsche-built TAG V6 appeared in the MP4/1E variant. The car won races for John Watson, including at Long Beach in 1983 from 22nd on the grid.
