The McLaren MCL35 is a Formula One car that McLaren built under the direction of James Key. It was originally intended to compete in the 2020 season only, but the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the championship and the lifespan of all 2020 cars was extended into 2021, when McLaren ran an upgraded version called the MCL35M with Mercedes engines. The MCL35 was a substantial development over the MCL34, with new aerodynamics better suited to Renault engines. It debuted at the delayed 2020 Austrian Grand Prix, driven by Carlos Sainz Jr. and Lando Norris, and McLaren finished third in the Constructors Championship for the first time since 2012, with podiums in Austria and Italy and three fastest laps.
