The McLaren M7A is a Formula One racing car that McLaren built and used in the world championship between 1968 and 1971. Robin Herd and Gordon Coppuck designed it, and it was the first McLaren powered by the Cosworth DFV engine, which the team then used until 1983. It was an open-wheeled single-seater with a mid-mounted engine and a bathtub monocoque of aluminium alloy panels, the engine acting as a stressed member. After two relatively unsuccessful years the M7A scored the first McLaren win at the 1968 Belgian Grand Prix and took two more wins that year, placing McLaren second in the Constructors Championship. Development versions included the M7B and M7C, and the M7D with an Alfa Romeo engine.
