The McLaren M5A was a racing car that Bruce McLaren Motor Racing constructed as its first purpose-built Formula One car, of which only one was ever built. It was the first car to use the BRM type 101 3.0 litre V12 engine, which produced 365 bhp. Its first race was the rain-affected 1967 Canadian Grand Prix, where Bruce McLaren worked up to fourth before a pit stop for a flat battery dropped him to seventh, and he retired from the last races of the year. Denis Hulme drove it in the 1968 South African Grand Prix, finishing fifth, and privateer Jo Bonnier then bought it and entered seven more Grands Prix in 1968, with a best result of sixth in Italy.
