The McLaren M4A was an open-wheel racing car that Robin Herd designed and the British Formula One team McLaren built to compete in the European Formula Two Championship. It made its debut in the 1967 European F2 Championship with Ford Cosworth FVA engines, and two works cars were first produced. It was reasonably competitive but could not challenge the Brabham BT23 or the Lotus 48, and little development followed because the team focus was firmly on Formula One. Customer cars ran in the 1968 and 1969 Tasman Series and in Formula Three, Formula Libre and the Australian Drivers Championship. Both the M4B and the M5A Formula One cars were based on the M4A chassis.
