McLaren M28

Automobiles

The McLaren M28 is a Formula One racing car that McLaren built and ran in the 1979 World Championship, powered by a naturally aspirated Ford Cosworth 3-litre engine. It was designed and wind tunnel tested during the second half of 1978, after a disastrous season in which James Hunt left and his intended replacement Ronnie Peterson was killed, leaving John Watson to be signed. The car was noticeably larger and bulkier than contemporary designs, which hurt its top speed, and three chassis were built. Testing showed poor grip because the ground effect design was ineffective, and a lack of torsional rigidity. Watson described it as a disaster.
