McLaren M26

Automobiles

The McLaren M26 was a Formula One racing car that Gordon Coppuck designed for the McLaren team to replace the aging M23. It was lighter and lower than its predecessor, with a smaller frontal area and a narrower monocoque, and Coppuck began the design in early 1976. After cooling problems the M26 debuted at the Dutch Grand Prix with Jochen Mass but was shelved until the Spanish Grand Prix of 1977. James Hunt, who at first hated it, improved its pace, and it won three races and gave McLaren third in the 1977 Constructors Championship. Lotus 79 made it obsolete in 1978, and a partial ground effect M26E failed to help. In all it won three races and scored 86 points.
