The McLaren M25 was an open-wheel racing car that John Barnard designed and the British constructor McLaren developed and built in 1973. It was based on the successful M23 Formula One car and was originally meant to be a Formula 5000 car, but it never competed in an F5000 race and did not contest a motor race until 1976, by which time Formula 5000 in its original form had folded. It then became a Formula One car for Emilio de Villota, fitted with a 3.0 litre Ford-Cosworth DFV V8 engine. It entered only one World Championship Grand Prix, the 1978 Spanish Grand Prix, where De Villota damaged it in practice and the team reverted his entry to the M23.
