McLaren M23

Automobiles

The McLaren M23 was a Formula One racing car designed by Gordon Coppuck with input from John Barnard and built by the McLaren team. Introduced for the 1973 season as a development of the M16 Indianapolis 500 car, it used a Ford Cosworth DFV engine prepared by Nicholson-McLaren Engines, and it took pole position on its first outing with Denny Hulme. Thirteen chassis were built. Through successive updates from M23B to M23E it carried Emerson Fittipaldi to the 1974 drivers and constructors titles and James Hunt to the 1976 drivers title, and in total it won 16 Grands Prix before being replaced by the M26.
