McLaren M16

Automobiles

The McLaren M16 was a race car that McLaren designed and built between 1971 and 1976 for American open wheel racing. It was the most successful car of the 1970s at the Indianapolis 500, with wins in 1972, 1974 and 1976, and the last to win with the Offenhauser engine. Unveiled in January 1971 to replace the M15, it had an aluminium monocoque powered by a turbocharged 2.61 litre Offenhauser four-cylinder engine delivering over 700 hp, and following the Lotus 72 its radiators sat in the sidepods, giving a wedge shape. Mark Donohue won the 1972 race in a Penske entry, Johnny Rutherford won in 1974, and the design inspired the M23 Formula One car.
