The McLaren M12 was an open-cockpit racing car that Bruce McLaren Motor Racing developed in 1969 solely to sell to customers in the Can-Am series. It combined elements of the M6 and M8 series, with the monocoque based on the early M6 and the bodywork of the M8A, and it was originally to be built for an assault on Le Mans with M6GT coupe bodywork. When the FIA refused to homologate it, the plan changed to a roadster sold as a Can-Am customer car. Trojan built all the M12s, and Chaparral Cars used one in early 1969 while its own car was delayed. Customers modified them, and two were imported to Japan, one going to Toyota.
