McDonnell Douglas A-12 Avenger II

Military Aircraft

The General Dynamics and McDonnell Douglas A-12 Avenger II was a proposed American all-weather, carrier-based stealth attack aircraft meant to replace the Grumman A-6 Intruder in the United States Navy and Marine Corps. It came from the Navy Advanced Tactical Aircraft program begun in 1983, in which the McDonnell Douglas and General Dynamics team was selected over a team of Northrop, Grumman and Vought, and its name was borrowed from the Second World War Grumman TBF Avenger. Cost overruns and delays led to cancellation of the program in 1991, before the aircraft ever flew, and litigation over the manner of cancellation ran until a settlement in January 2014.
