The Mazdaspeed Protegé was the first consumer vehicle model that Mazda offered under the Mazdaspeed name, debuting in 2003 as a performance upgrade of the Protegé MP3 and released only in the North American market. It raised output from the MP3's 140 horsepower to 170 horsepower with a T25 Callaway-Garrett turbocharger and an intercooler, and it gained a new front air dam and a new spoiler. In Japan the contemporary Mazdaspeed Familia instead used a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre FS-ZE engine with higher compression and revised camshafts to produce 173 horsepower at 6800 rpm.
