The first generation MX-6 appeared in 1987, based on the Mazda GD platform and styled after futuristic sports compact concept cars of the early 1980s. It was a large coupe powered by the inline four Mazda F engines, a 2.2 liter F2 of 110 horsepower or a turbocharged 145 horsepower version in the United States, with five speed manual or four speed automatic transmissions, and four wheel steering on some GT models. In the United States it lasted until 1992. Its model years here run from 1987 to 1990.
