Mazda released a second generation LA2 series Luce in November 1972, a rotary powered model that was later exported as the Mazda RX-4. The conventionally engined Luce sedan would not arrive in the Japanese market until April 1973. It was available as a hardtop coupe, a formal sedan, a custom sedan and a station wagon, which was also sold as a van in Japan. While the Luce was a large, luxuriously equipped sedan it still complied with Japanese government dimension regulations. Its model years run from 1972 to 1976.
