Louisville and Nashville class M-1

Steam and Early Locomotives

The Louisville and Nashville class M-1 was a class of forty-two 2-8-4 steam locomotives built between 1942 and 1949 as dual-service engines, nicknamed Big Emmas by the crews. Baldwin Locomotive Works built the first two batches of ten in 1942 and 1944, and Lima built the third batch of twenty-two, numbers 1970 to 1991, in 1949, making them the second to last Berkshires Lima ever built. They were the most expensive Berkshires made, fitted with roller bearings, cast steel frames and cylinders, large fireboxes and big boilers. They hauled passenger and coal trains in Kentucky until steam ended on the railroad in 1956, and by 1957 all had been cut up.
