The Continental Mark III was the brainchild of Lee Iacocca, who in 1965 asked designer Gene Bordinat to put a Rolls Royce grille on a Thunderbird. It was based on the fourth generation Lincoln Continental and the four door fifth generation Thunderbird, and it was unveiled at the 12 Hours of Sebring on 23 March 1968 as an early 1969 model. In its first year it outsold the Cadillac Eldorado. Its model years run from 1969 to 1971.
