The Lima LS-1200, officially the A-3170, was a 1,200 horsepower diesel-electric switcher built by Lima-Hamilton at Lima, Ohio, from May 1950 to August 1951. It grew out of the 1,000 horsepower A-3080, which gained the extra power through a change of fuel rack settings on the same turbocharged Hamilton T89SA eight cylinder engine, driving a Westinghouse generator and four traction motors. A smaller 660 horsepower version was drawn up for the American Rolling Mill Company but never built, and Southern Pacific ordered sixty units yet accepted Baldwin S-12 switchers instead. Two LS-1200 locomotives survive, one at the Illinois Railway Museum and one at the Whitewater Valley Railroad.
