Lima LS-1000

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The Lima LS-1000, which Lima-Hamilton itself called the A-3080, was a 1,000 horsepower diesel-electric switcher built at Lima, Ohio, between May 1949 and April 1950. It was the first diesel locomotive the company produced and became the pattern for the rest of its switcher line, using a turbocharged Hamilton T89SA eight cylinder engine, a Westinghouse generator and four Westinghouse traction motors. Lima-Hamilton never gave its models names, so the LS-1000 label is a railfan convention. The firm took shape in 1947 when Lima Locomotive Works merged with General Machinery Corporation, and the A-3080 was shown in 1949 as five demonstrators that went to several industrial and railroad owners. The last surviving example, once Armco Steel 709, still runs at the Whitewater Valley Railroad.
