The Lamborghini LM001 was a prototype off-road vehicle designed and built by Lamborghini and first shown at the 1981 Geneva Auto Show beside the new Jalpa. It was a redesign of the earlier Cheetah military-vehicle concept, whose project had failed, made possible by fresh capital from investors. Where the Cheetah used a Chrysler engine, the LM001 carried a 5.9 litre, 360 cubic inch V8 built by AMC, rated at 180 horsepower and mounted at the rear, and Lamborghini intended to offer the Countach V12 in production versions. The rear engine placement gave unfavourable handling when accelerating, so the vehicle was dropped after a single prototype. Its stated predecessor is the Lamborghini Cheetah.
