Kawasaki C-2

Military Aircraft

The Kawasaki C-2, earlier known as the XC-2 and C-X, is a mid-size, long-range, high-speed military transport powered by two turbofan engines, developed and built by Kawasaki Aerospace Company to replace the Kawasaki C-1. After studying the C-130J Super Hercules, C-17 Globemaster III and Airbus A400M, Japan concluded that no aircraft in production met what the Japan Air Self-Defense Force required, and so chose an indigenous design. The prototype made its first flight from Gifu Air Field in January 2010, and the type formally entered JASDF service in June 2016. It can carry about 36 tonnes of cargo, and an electronic-warfare version called the EC-2 stand-off jammer is also planned. Efforts to sell it overseas are under way.
