Kamov Ka-22

Lighter-Than-Air Craft and Rotorcraft

The Kamov Ka-22 Vintokryl, NATO reporting name Hoop, was an experimental rotorcraft that Kamov developed for the Soviet Air Force. It combined helicopter vertical take-off and landing with fixed-wing cruise: in essence a fixed-wing aircraft with rotors above the wing tips, each tip carrying an engine that drove a four-bladed tractor propeller and a four-bladed main rotor. The hold, comparable to an Antonov An-12's, could take 80 seats or 16.5 tonnes of cargo. It first lifted off on 17 June 1959 and set eight world records, but a prototype rolled and crashed on 28 August 1962 on a ferry flight to Moscow, killing the whole crew.
