The first generation Jeep Grand Cherokee, the ZJ, was introduced in 1992 for the 1993 model year, with development begun at American Motors as a mid-size successor to the compact Cherokee, intended to replace both it and the aging Wagoneer. It went on sale with the AMC derived 4.0 liter inline six and gained Chrysler's 5.2 liter Magnum V8 in early 1993, and it was built at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant. Its model years run from 1993 to 1998.
