Jaguar XKSS

Automobiles

The Jaguar XKSS was a road-going version of the Jaguar D-Type racing car, first built in 1957. After Jaguar withdrew from competition at the end of 1956, unsold D-Types at the Browns Lane factory were converted for road use and for the American market at the decision of William Lyons, with a passenger door, a full-width windscreen, a folding fabric roof, chrome bumpers and XK140 tail light clusters. Sixteen of a planned twenty-five were completed and most were sold in the United States before a factory fire on 12 February 1957 destroyed the nine still in production. In 2016 Jaguar announced that nine continuation cars would be hand-built to the original specification to finish the run. The actor Steve McQueen owned one, painted British racing green.
