Jaguar XJR-5

Automobiles

The Jaguar XJR-5 was an IMSA GTP sports prototype race car designed, developed and built by Bob Tullius's Group 44 team for Jaguar, to compete from 1982 in the IMSA GT Championship. It grew from a plan by Jaguar chief executive John Egan to start a racing programme to lift falling American sales, and was designed by Lee Dykstra with Max Schenkel and Randy Wittine, using a computerised system and wind tunnel work on a scale model. It was completed and presented in August 1982, and its roughly 600 horsepower V12 could take it to around 230 mph. It won four races in its first season, and its first victory for Group 44 in 1984 came at the Miami Grand Prix. It contested races until 1985 before Jaguar replaced it with the XJR-7.
