The Jaguar XJR-11 was a sports-prototype racing car introduced for the 1989 World Sports Prototype Championship, with its sister car the XJR-10 built for IMSA races. For 1989 Tom Walkinshaw judged that the big naturally aspirated V12 Jaguars were uncompetitive in sprint events against lighter turbocharged rivals, so Jaguar developed a new engine from the Rover V64V 3.5 litre V6 designed for the MG Metro 6R4. Two variants with two Garrett turbochargers were made, a 3.0 litre of about 650 hp for IMSA and a 3.5 litre of about 750 hp for the world championship. Tony Southgate designed a compact carbon-fibre monocoque chassis with double wishbone suspension. It debuted at Brands Hatch in July 1989, finishing sixth, and won once, at Silverstone in 1990.
