Jaguar XJ220

Automobiles

The Jaguar XJ220 is a two-seat supercar that Jaguar built from 1992 until 1994 in collaboration with Tom Walkinshaw Racing, and for a time it was the fastest production car in the world: during testing at the Nardò track in Italy, one with its catalytic converters removed recorded 217 miles per hour, 349 kilometres per hour. It grew from a V12-engined four-wheel-drive concept designed by an informal group of Jaguar employees working in their spare time, unveiled at the 1988 British International Motor Show in Birmingham, whose reception prompted Jaguar to put it into production; a limited run of 220 to 350 cars was announced, and about 281 deposits of 50,000 pounds were taken. Engineering and emissions requirements replaced the V12 with a 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6, derived from the Austin Rover V64V built for the MG Metro 6R4 and redesigned for Tom Walkinshaw Racing, and after the early-1990s recession many buyers chose not to take up their options, so just 275 cars were produced. The name continued the XK120 habit of quoting top speed, as the concept car aimed at 220 miles per hour.
