The Jaguar X-Type was a compact executive car that Jaguar Cars made from 2001 to 2009 in a single generation, internally designated X400. Developed while Ford owned Jaguar as a division of its Premier Automotive Group, it marked Jaguar's entry into the compact executive class and was the marque's first front-wheel-drive car, its first estate car in series production, and the first Jaguar with a diesel or four-cylinder engine. Its platform was a modified version of the front-drive Ford CD132 shared with the Mondeo, with all-wheel drive added as Jaguar Traction, and its petrol engines were Jaguar-tweaked Ford Duratec V6s of 2.5 and 3.0 litres, joined in 2002 by a 2.1 litre and in 2003 by four-cylinder diesels based on the Ford Duratorq. The saloon launched in 2001 and the estate in January 2004, both built at the Halewood plant near Liverpool, which was renovated at a cost of 450 million dollars. About 350,000 were produced over eight years, but the car's closeness to the Mondeo drew criticism, and in July 2009 Jaguar announced the end of X-Type production.
