The Jaguar S-Type of 1963 to 1968 was a luxury saloon announced on 30 September 1963 as a more technically sophisticated development of the Mark 2, offering a more luxurious alternative without the size and expense of the Mark X. It took a mid-scale version of the Mark X independent rear suspension in place of the Mark 2 live axle, with longer rear bodywork and a redesigned interior, and was sold with the 3.4 or 3.8 litre XK engine in twin-carburettor form only, because the triple-carburettor setup would not fit the Mark 2 engine bay. It was coded Utah Mk III in development. The S-Type sold alongside the Mark 2 and, from 1966, the 420, until the XJ6 arrived in 1968. A retro-styled car of the same name was built from 1999 and is a separate entry.
