The Jaguar Mark IX was a four-door luxury saloon announced on 8 October 1958 and built by Jaguar Cars until 1961. It was generally similar to the Mark VIII it replaced, with early cars carrying only a chrome Mk IX badge on the boot lid, but it had a larger 3.8 litre engine of 220 bhp, four-wheel disc brakes and power assisted recirculating ball steering. It was the first production Jaguar with servo-assisted four-wheel disc brakes, and power steering reduced the lock-to-lock turns from 4.5 to 3.5. The four-speed manual gearbox was standard, with overdrive and a Borg Warner three-speed automatic as options, the automatic being the most popular choice. The torsion bar front suspension and leaf-sprung rear axle were kept from the Mark VIII, and the car gave way to the Mark X in 1961.
