The Jaguar Mark 1 was a British luxury saloon built by Jaguar from 1955 to 1959 and sold at the time as the Jaguar 2.4 Litre and 3.4 Litre; the Mark 1 name was applied afterwards, when the Mark 2 replaced it in October 1959. The 2.4 Litre was announced on 28 September 1955 and was the company's first small saloon since 1949, easily outselling Jaguar's larger and dearer cars. The 3.4 Litre followed in the United States in February 1957. It was the first Jaguar with unitary construction of body and chassis, with independent front suspension on double wishbones and coil springs and a live rear axle on inverted semi-elliptic springs located by a Panhard rod. The 2.4 used a short-stroke version of the XK120 twin-cam six, rated at 112 bhp net.
