The Jaguar 420 and its Daimler Sovereign equivalent were introduced at the October 1966 London Motor Show and built for two years as the last of the compact sporting saloons Jaguar offered through the 1960s on a common wheelbase. Developed from the S-Type, the 420 cost about 200 pounds more and effectively ended interest in it. It kept the S-Type 54 inch independent rear suspension but took a twin-carburettor version of the 4.2 litre XK engine and front styling closer to that of the Mark X. William Lyons added it partly because Mark X sales were disappointing and the S-Type styling was harming its sales. The 420 and the Sovereign were both replaced by the XJ6 late in 1968, while the S-Type continued to sell alongside them until then.
