Humber Light Reconnaissance Car

Automobiles

The Humber light reconnaissance car, also known as the Humberette or Ironside, was a British armoured car built by the Rootes Group during the Second World War on the chassis of the Humber Super Snipe. From 1940 to 1943 about 3,600 were built, including 200 Ironside Is. The Mk I had an open-topped hull and 4x2 drive, the Mk II added an enclosed roof with a turret for the machine gun, and the Mk III, whose production began in late 1941, brought 4x4 drive. Armed with a Boys anti-tank rifle and a Bren light machine gun and fitted with a No. 19 radio set, it served with infantry reconnaissance regiments and the RAF Regiment in Tunisia, Italy and Western Europe, and three Mk I vehicles were modified as Special Ironside Saloons for the British royal family and cabinet ministers.
