Hawker Siddeley HS.141

Airliners and Commercial Jet Aircraft

The Hawker Siddeley HS.141 was a design study for a 100-seat British V/STOL airliner, drawn up by Hawker Siddeley Aviation in response to a 1969 outline requirement from the British Transport Aircraft Requirements Committee for a vertical take-off airliner with a range of 450 miles, aimed at steep and quiet approaches to city airports. The proposal was a T-tailed, all-metal jet with a swept low wing, two wing-mounted cruise turbofans and sixteen lift jet engines in sponsons along the fuselage, eight per side, with a stretched version for up to 150 passengers using twenty lift fans. Details were first released at the Hanover air show in March 1970 and the design was tested in wind tunnels with one-tenth scale models. No prototype or production aircraft was ever built, because there was little enthusiasm for civil VTOL operations and development of the lift engines was cancelled.
