The Grumman F7F Tigercat was a heavy twin-engined fighter flown by the United States Navy and Marine Corps from late in the Second World War until 1954, and the first twin-engined fighter the Navy deployed. Designed for the large Midway-class carriers, it was fast and meant to be heavily armed, with four 20 mm cannon and four machine guns plus hardpoints for bombs and torpedoes, but early versions were too big for older carriers and failed carrier trials on directional stability with one engine out. They flew from land bases. The Tigercat arrived too late for combat in the war, serving in reconnaissance and then as a night fighter and attack aircraft in Korea.
