Grumman A-6 Intruder

Military Aircraft

The Grumman A-6 Intruder was a twin-jet, all-weather subsonic attack aircraft flown by the United States Navy and Marine Corps from 1963 to 1997. It answered a 1957 Navy requirement for a long-range, all-weather interdiction aircraft that could also give the Marines short-takeoff close air support, replacing the piston-engined Douglas A-1 Skyraider. Powered by two Pratt and Whitney J52 turbojets, with a pilot and a bombardier-navigator seated side by side, it was the first Navy aircraft built around an integrated airframe and weapons system. The prototype flew on 19 April 1960, and the decision to end production came in 1990.
