The Gloster TSR.38 was a single-engined, three-seat biplane designed as a naval torpedo, spotter and reconnaissance aircraft in the early 1930s. It began as the FS.36 for Air Ministry specification S.9/30, flew in April 1932 with a Rolls-Royce Kestrel, and was then rebuilt with a Rolls-Royce Goshawk and larger wings to cover specification S.15/33. It was an all-metal, fabric-covered machine with swept wings that folded for carrier stowage, a split-axle undercarriage for torpedo launching and an arrester hook. It was tested aboard HMS Courageous in 1934 but lost out to the private-venture Fairey design that became the Swordfish, and only one was built.
