The Gloster Goring was a single-engined, two-seat biplane built to Air Ministry specifications issued in 1926 for a day and torpedo bomber, for which several makers entered prototypes. It had staggered, unequal-span wings, a wooden fuselage of rectangular section, a pilot under a cut-out in the upper wing and a gunner with a Scarff-ring gun who could lie prone for bombing, and it could carry torpedoes on a split-axle undercarriage or operate as a seaplane. It first flew in March 1927 with a Bristol Jupiter VI engine. At Martlesham Heath in 1928 it competed against the Hare, Harrier and Witch without winning an order, and the single aircraft later served as an engine testbed at Bristol Filton works.
