Launched in September 1983 and developed under the codename Apollo, the Orion was designed to fill the market demand for a traditional four door saloon which had been absent from the Escort range since the end of Mark II production in 1980 and in larger cars since the demise of the Cortina in 1982. The front looked similar to a contemporary Escort apart from the grille, but the rear had a long flat boot, a three box saloon design. Its model years run from 1983 to 1985.
