The Fairmont was launched in August 1977 as a 1978 model, based on the rear wheel drive Ford Fox platform with steel unibody construction. Its standard engine for the whole production run was a 140 cubic inch 2.3 litre inline four shared with the Pinto, with a 3.3 litre inline six optional from 1978 to 1983. It debuted with sedan and wagon bodies, and the Futura coupe followed late in 1978. Its model years run from 1978 to 1983.
