Fairey Fantôme

Military Aircraft

The Fairey Fantôme, also called the Fairey Féroce, was a fighter prototype designed in 1934 by Marcel Lobelle to a Belgian specification to replace the Firefly II. It was an all-metal single-bay biplane with fabric skinning, a 925 hp Hispano-Suiza 12Ycrs V-12 and provision for an engine-mounted 20 mm Oerlikon cannon. The prototype first flew on 6 June 1935 at the Great West Aerodrome and was lost in a crash at Evere during the Belgian competition. Three more were assembled at Avions Fairey in Belgium as the Féroce, two going to the Soviet Union and one to the British Air Ministry. No further production followed.
