The Fairey Campania was a two-seat, single-engine patrol and reconnaissance biplane with twin main floats and backward-folding wings, and was the first aeroplane designed specifically for carrier operations. It took its name from HMS Campania, the converted liner that carried the first examples and the only ship of its group with a flight deck, from which the aircraft took off on jettisonable wheeled bogies. Two prototypes flew in 1917, followed by production F.17 and F.22 versions with different engines. The type served as a spotter at sea and took part in the North Russia campaign of 1918 before being declared obsolete in August 1919.
