The electric Jaguar XJ was a battery-electric luxury saloon that Jaguar Land Rover meant to launch in 2021 as the successor to the XJ (X351), whose last example was built in July 2019. Announced at Castle Bromwich on 5 July 2019 under the project code X391, it was to be built on the new Modular Longitudinal Architecture platform by the team behind the I-Pace, and was seen as essential for safeguarding the jobs at the plant. The pandemic forced spending cuts, and in February 2021 chief executive Thierry Bollore announced it was cancelled as part of the Reimagine plan, although the XJ name might return. An earlier prototype of 2010 based on the X351 had paired an electric traction motor with a three-cylinder range-extending petrol engine.
