Dornier Do 417

Military Aircraft

The Dornier Do 417 was a twin-engine multirole combat aircraft developed in 1942 in answer to the Luftwaffe request for a medium bomber, a contest in which Dornier, Junkers, Heinkel and Blohm and Voss competed. Plans were presented to the Reichsluftfahrtministerium on 22 January 1943 for a bomber and reconnaissance aircraft with a stepless cockpit, cable-cutters on the nose and wing leading edges, dive brakes and armoured seats. Its engines were changed from Junkers Jumo 222 to Daimler-Benz DB 603A and then DB 603G. Its estimated performance was worse than that of the Junkers Ju 188, which was chosen, so the Do 417 was rejected and never built.
