The third Charger wore new fuselage sheet metal with a split grille for 1971, when Dodge merged the Coronet and Charger lines so that every two door B body was a Charger and every four door a Coronet. Muscle car versions faded quickly because of insurance costs and emission rules, the Rallye replaced the R/T, and the car moved toward personal luxury. A restyle in 1973 helped it reach about 108,000 sales, the best of the generation, and 1974 was the last year with performance options. Its model years run from 1971 to 1974.
