Delta IV

Spacecraft and Launch Vehicles

Delta IV was a group of five expendable launch systems in the Delta rocket family, flown 45 times between 2002 and 2024. Boeing designed it for the Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle program, and it became a United Launch Alliance product in 2006. It came in two main versions: Medium, with four configurations, and Heavy, which strapped two extra Common Booster Cores to a central core. Each core was powered by an RS-68 engine burning liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, with a cryogenic second stage using an RL10B-2 engine. Built at ULA's facility in Decatur, Alabama, and finished at the launch site, it launched mainly military payloads for the United States Air Force, along with other government payloads and a single commercial satellite. The final Medium flight took place in 2019 and the final Heavy flight on April 9, 2024.
