De Havilland DH.56 Hyena

Military Aircraft

The de Havilland DH.56 Hyena was a prototype British army cooperation aircraft of the 1920s. It was a single-engined two-bay biplane carrying a crew of two, developed to meet Air Ministry Specification 30/24 and based on the earlier DH.42B Dingo. It was armed with a forward-firing Vickers machine gun and a Lewis gun operated by the observer, and a hook beneath the fuselage allowed it to pick up messages. The first Hyena flew on 17 May 1925 with a 385 hp Armstrong Siddeley Jaguar III radial engine. The design was unsuccessful: only two were built, and the Royal Air Force chose the Armstrong Whitworth Atlas instead.
